George Sowden studied architecture at Gloucester College of Art in Cheltenham, England. In the 1960s he moved to Milan and in 1970 began collaborating, as a consultant, with Olivetti, the renowned Italian manufacturer of office machinery, computers and office furniture. This long relationship with Olivetti lasted 20 years. In the 1970s, Sowden also worked at the heart of the Italian, radical design movement which enabled him, in 1981, to become a founding member of Memphis, an avant-garde movement that defined the post-modern movement. In the same year (1981) he founded his own studio, Sowden Design. The studio is still running and works in various design fields worldwide.
