James Irvine was born in London and graduated in 1984 from The Royal College of Art in London. He moved to Milan the same year. From 1984 to 1992 he worked as the Design Consultant for Olivetti Design Studio, designing industrial products under the direction of Michele De Lucchi and Ettore Sottsass. From 1993 to 1997, in parallel with his private studio, he was a partner of the industrial design studio Sottsass Associati in Milan. In 2004 he was nominated RDI (Royal Designer for Industry) by the Royal Society of Arts in London and in 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in design from Kingston University. Throughout his long career the Irvine studio has collaborated with internationally renowned companies, such as Alias, Arper, Artemide, B&B Italia, Canon, Coro, Duravit, Foscarini, LG, Magis, Marsotto Edizioni, MDF Italia, Muji, Olivari, Olivetti, Pamar, Phaidon, Ströer, Thonet, Whirlpool, WMF and Zumtobel. After his early death in 2013, Studio Irvine found natural continuity in the form of Marialaura Rossiello, partner to James Irvine srl since 2009, and Maddalena Casadei, Irvine’s right hand person for nine years.
